Band Camp 2022

 Friday, June 17, 2022

Hi everyone. For the past three days -7 to 9 June 2022-, our band held the Band Camp 2022. Our main objective for this band camp was to prepare ourselves for the upcoming concert, as well as to know each other better. As it was the first band camp since the Movement Control Order, we were all very excited about it.

On the first day, we had an ice-breaking session with the whole band to get comfortable with each other. After that, we met our tutors for the first time for sectional session. Mr Ales Tsok taught the Woodwind section, while Mr John Bourque instructed the Brass section and Ms Nian Shee the Percussion section. For our new members, we invited two ex-members, Teoh Jia Yong and Ong Zhi Hsuen to give them a masterclass. After a short lunch break, we had concert practice with Mr Lim, who had traveled far from Singapore to teach us. His session was eye-opening and we are able to recognize our flaws clearly and learn new techniques to improve our skills.

On the second day, we invited the Dalcroze method expert, Dr Poon Chiew Hwa, to give us a masterclass. We were able to enjoy this masterclass with the Sinfonietta members, giving us a chance to meet new people and form new bonds. The session was very fun as we got to experience learning music through movement. After that, the seniors had sectional with the tutors, while the new members had masterclasses with Avril Long and Tobias Wong, who are both ex-members of our band as well.

On the last day, we had a marching session in the morning and a whole band rehearsal with Mr Lim. And in the end, we were taught the Kodály method by Ms Low Li Yien. Through all sorts of games, we had a great time learning music in a fun and interactive way.

Through this band camp, we are able to discover our flaws and problems and learn a lot of new things. To all the tutors who have come to teach us, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hope to learn from you again in the near future. We are also grateful to our teacher advisors and parents for your patience and guidance throughout this whole camp.

Resuming Physical Practice and New Members' Orientation Day

 Monday, May 2, 2022

Hi all. Just this past Saturday, 30 April, we are proud to announce that we have returned to physical practice at last! During the gruelling lockdown, we have always been forced to practice online via Zoom but at long last we are able to come back to meet our fellow band members face to face.

To make this week even more exciting, we are able to meet our new members! We had the pleasure to organize an orientation day to introduce them to our band. We briefed the new members on our rules and traditions, walked through them on the committee list, and introduced our conductor as well as our teacher advisors. Hope they will have a fun time and learn lots here at band!

Telematch 2022

Thursday, March 31, 2022

Hi everyone. Just this past Saturday on March 26, we had an exciting event – Virtual Telematch 2022! It was hosted via Zoom from 8pm to 10.30 pm by the Form 2s.

We were split into 6 groups, which are Alexandrite, Amethyst, Citrine, Emerald, Sapphire, and Tanzanite. The OCs prepared all sorts of fun games to entertain us, such as ‘The Ice Breaking Riddles’ to warm us up to each other and ‘Guess The Song’. There was even a polling game titled ‘ Family Feud’ where we vote over things like the best singer, most likely to not survive a zombie apocalypse and all sorts of interesting titles! In the end, there was a fierce singing match between the members at a desperate attempt to win points for their teams.

After a fun and exciting night, we have our winner of Telematch 2022, Alexandrite! Congrats to all the winners and thank you to the OCs for such a wonderful night!

Kem Muzik 2021

Monday, January 3, 2022

In the past November, some of our members have been selected to perform for an event organized by the KPM, named Kem Muzik, along with our fellow badans Sinfonietta, Harmonica and Guitar, Choir and also Kelab Ketua Tingkatan (KKT). Before the actual recording, we had 4 physical combined practices which fell on the 12th, 15th, 17th and 19th of November 2021.

On the first day, our music master, Looi Jia Wen, conducted and went through the two pieces that we would perform, which are “Zheng Fu” and “Enjoy Enjammi”. It was the first time we had a combined practice with the other musical badans and we are pleased to say that it was an enriching experience.

On the 15th of February, our tutor, Sir Eric, polished and ran through both of our pieces. And on the third practice, a charming Tamil dancing and singing group joined us for our song “Enjoy Enjammi”. There were also 2 young and talented rappers who impressed us greatly with their splendid talents. And most excitingly, a few government staff visited us and watched our performance!

On the last day of our practice, we practiced on our own, but we still had fun and bonded well with each other.

The most important day had arrived. We gathered at school at 6.20am and made our way to the recording venue by bus. We recorded our performance there and it all went smoothly. We were done by 12.30pm and headed back to school.

This project has ended well and we are delighted that we can still perform even in the midst of a pandemic. Needless to say, we are overjoyed to have become closer to the other musical badans and know each other better. We are especially grateful to KPM/JPS for providing us a priceless opportunity and a stage for us to shine even in these dark circumstances. Through this project, we hope with our entire hearts that the audience will be comforted by the magic of our music.
