The
vibrant red signifies the unyielding spirit of the band that may be likened to
a fire that keeps on burning. Fueled by power, precision and passion, the band
strives on in courage to conquer the best.
White
White
signifies joy that music brings to all. Music is the light that spreads
goodness and friendship among CHS Band members and all those who contribute
directly or indirectly to the band, no matter how big or small their role is.
Thus it is also the colour of unity. We are one big family and it is the colour
that depicts our band camaraderie.
Black
Black
signifies strength and professionalism. It also denotes the elegance, prestige
and the highest standards of professionalism we tirelessly aim for.
History
Catholic
High School Band was established in 1982 under the patronage of Rev. Bro. Paul
Sung, a former principal of CHS. This young and talented band started off as a
marching band with 30 members, with Mr. Xavier Anthony as the first band tutor.
For many years the band has worked hard and developed tremendously, with a steady increase in band members, musical instruments and better facilities, courtesy of the generous donations of the public, as well as the PTA of Catholic High School.
Under the guidance of Mr. Chin Ying Soong (1991) and Mr. Eric Lee (1992 - today), who both are former CHS Band members themselves, the music quality and standard has improved vastly.
CHS Band's first concert in 1991, 'An Evening of Music', was a joint effort with the Raffles Institution Symphonic Band of Singapore. Her own concert, 'An Evening of Music 1993' was held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the band. The third successive CHS Band concert - 'An Evening of Music' was held in conjunction with Catholic High School's 40th anniversary. The fourth concert - 'An Evening of Music 1999' was held in order to bring the band to the greater music level, followed by the fifth concert - 'An Evening of Music 2001'.
Later in 1997, CHS Band was selected to represent the state of Selangor in the National Secondary Schools Marching Band Competition. It won the third place - a feat that had certainly brought tremendous pride to Selangor.
The reputation gained from the competition aided it further in getting selected for performances during the 16th Commonwealth Games along with other school bands such as the Vivikananda, Assunta and Tun Fatimah bands.
Another achievement of note was the joint concert with Fo Ho Junior High School of Taipei, which was renowned as the best school band in Taipei. The joint concert, which was held on 13th Febuary 1999, was indeed a great success.
CHS Band has constantly been invited and selected to participate in numerous performances and events every year since its inception, such as the National Day parades, the Selangor Teachers Excellent Service Awards, the Sultan's Birthday Parade, to name a few. The greatest achievement of the Band thus far has been becoming Champion in the Malaysian National High School Marching Band Competition twice, once in the year 2000 and another in 2005 - Selangor's greatest pride ever. CHS Band is now undoubtedly one of the best school bands in the country.
Currently at the age of 41, the Catholic High School Band is still blossoming with each passing year. The band has come a long way, bracing itself for a higher standard, striving for greater success and in years to come, CHS Band will only continue to aim for the best.
